Why study economics and what employment
opportunities will you have?
Economics is a social science that analyzes the behavior and
evolution of society with the aim of proposing strategies
and public policy that enable greater levels of prosperity
and equity. After completing the ITAM economics program, the
student will have acquired problem solving skills, intellectual
discipline, the ability to think independently about issues
such as economic problems and policy and a high level of numeracy.
These are essential skills for a great many professions making
graduates in economics highly valued in many fields within
the public and private sectors as well as in academia and
research. The activities that economists commonly undertake
are varied and include:
... designing and implementing monetary, fiscal and financial
policy within government.
... participating in banks and consultancies as investment
strategists or economic analysts.
... carrying out cutting edge research in leading universities
and research centers here or overseas.
... contributing to environmental protection and a better
use of natural resources by working in government or non governmental
organizations.
... fighting poverty with international development agencies
or government.
... directing companies in the design of their organizational
structures, financial forecasts and operating strategies.
... heading up Mexican and multinational corporations.

Where do our graduates work?
To gain a clearer perspective of the kinds of opportunities
available to economics graduates, it may be helpful to look
at where many of our alumni currently work. In the public
sector, our alumni have gone on to take up positions in various
government offices such the ministries of Finance, Commerce,
Social Development, Energy, Natural Resources, and the Interior,
as well as Congress and the Office of the President.
Many graduates work in finance, in national and international
banks, brokerage houses, insurance companies, pension fund
management firms and investment funds in the U.S and Europe.
Some graduates have gone on to work in international organizations
such as the World Bank, the Inter-American Development
Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Why should you choose to study at the ITAM?
The ITAM economics
undergraduate program is considered by many to be the
best in the country.
Our unique study program offers students the option of choosing
between four tracks of specialization.
The structure of our program is designed so that those students
wishing to do so may take two degrees simultaneously.
We have over 80 academic exchange agreements with universities
in the United States, Canada, Europe and Latin America.
The ITAM has a long tradition of attracting exceptional students
who are committed to achieving the highest standards of academic
excellence. Since 1976, ITAM economics students have won first
place in the annual Premio Banamex de Economía and they are
frequently awarded prizes in the Tlacaelel, IMEF and Banobras
competitions.
The ITAM Department of Economics sends more students on to
postgraduate programs overseas than all the other Mexican
universities together. Our graduates enroll in programs in
universities such as Chicago, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Yale,
Northwestern, Pennsylvania, Berkeley, Columbia, UCLA, NYU
and Rochester, often with scholarships from the university
itself.
We select our faculty based on their teaching abilities and
research excellence. Most of our full time faculty members
hold Ph.D.s from top universities in the U.S. and have earned
international recognition for their academic achievements
and publication record.
The Department of Economics is ranked 1st within Latin America
for its research output and among the 50 best institutions
worldwide.
Our three research centers offer students the opportunity
to further develop their analytic skills and understanding
of economics by collaborating as research assistants:
Center for Economic Research and Analysis (CIE)
Center of Economic Analysis and Research (CAIE)
Center for Applied Economics and Public Policy (CEAPP)
Students may contribute to our publication, La Gaceta de Economía.
Created by a group of students in 1995, it has been managed
and edited by undergraduates since then. It is now considered
one of the principal, specialized economics publications in
the country.
We provide our students with an excellent careers office through
which they receive an average of 12 job offers each.
